So any speck you see through the viewfinder is not on the sensor. On the internet this particular issue seems to be quite common.

Hi all i own a d5100 for less than two months (i did change lens couple of times), and i just noticed yesterday that there's a spot in my viewfinder. It appears that the dust is on your focusing screen. Dust in viewfinder, but not in picture. But if its in the viewfinder system it doesn't affect the images.
Its very important to remember that the sensor has to be completely dust/oil free, if its not, then it will show up in the images.

With dslrs, it is possible to see dust through your viewfinder and not in your shots. Bit of a shock as i like to keep as clean as possible ,even down to sensor cleaning.
